A team approach is a critical success factor for a successful CDMP® program. Of primary importance is a hospital-wide vision established through steering committee. Each component of the team brings a unique and valuable skill. The physician has the primary responsibility for documentation in the record. With constantly changing and obscure rules the CDS is responsible for understanding these changes and guiding the physician with clinical clarification that utilizes these rules to capture appropriate severity of illness. The Coding Professional brings an expertise in applying the coding guidelines to the documented record and acts as a resource for navigating the CMS and Coding Clinic changes.
